| Manassas Transfer History
Anyone who's moved knows the trouble involved. Packing shelves of heavy books, risking sprains and hernias to tote a 200 pound sleeper sofa up a staircase, lashing mattresses to buckling sedan rooftops... Why risk mammoth medical bills and smashed picture tubes? Why not call a professional? Manassas Transfer, Inc. is a moving company with a history of satisfied customers. The Cook family has been settling people in new homes and businesses in new offices since 1962. Sales Representative John Stevens says that repeat business is the secret to the company's long-lasting success. Manassas Transfer provides quality service at a fair price, featuring competitive hourly rates on local moves (less than 30 miles). The company also has reasonable rates on moves within Virginia (more than 30 miles) with guaranteed two-day service. It also has discounts on interstate moves, especially the East Coast, with both binding and nonbinding estimates. After calling Manassas Transfer, folks can stand back and let our experienced, uniformed employees take care of the move. As an agent for Stevens Worldwide Van Lines, the company can move household goods virtually anywhere.
The company offers partial to complete packing services. Clean, padded vans stand by to whisk furniture to its new home. For our customers, Manassas Transfer offers containerized storage in government approved warehouses. The movers belong to the Better Business Bureau, and are an affiliate member of the Prince William Chamber of Commerce. Manassas Transfer is not only a good company, it's a good neighbor, supporting the community and local charities such as the Lion's Club, Emmanuel Baptist Church, and many of the local schools. September, 2001 Manassas Transfer and Delivery Service was started in 1962 retailing used furniture, making deliveries and moving household goods. In 1981, we became incorporated as Manassas Transfer, Inc. We will soon be celebrating our 46th anniversary. We attribute this longevity to our many customers, our many repeat customers and most of all, to the professional personnel we are fortunate to have in our employ. Manassas Transfer has grown from three men and one truck to a company with 28 employees (which increases to 50 during the summer season) and to a fleet of 35 trucks, tractors, trailers and packing vans. We service customers who need local moves, moves within the state of Virginia or who need storage for their household goods. As an agent for Stevens Van Lines, we also move customers who need the service outside of the state to anywhere in the United States, Canada or overseas. "As our business grew, it became necessary to expand our storage capacity. In December 1997, with the assistance of Linda Decker of the Flory Small Business Development Center, Inc., we were able to build our new facility at 10440 Colonel Court, Manassas, Virginia. At the new facility we have 40,000 square feet of warehouse storage space, 27,000 square feet of office space and 200 self storage units. With Mrs. Decker's expertise and knowledge, we were able to work with the SBA to finance our new building. I personally cannot express strongly enough my appreciation for all the assistance received from the Flory Small Business Development Center. They are an enormous asset to our business community." Manassas Transfer Breaks Ground on New Warehouse
Manassas Transfer, Inc. broke ground on Tuesday for a new $2 million facility that will include a storage warehouse, 188 mini-storage units and headquarters offices. The project is being built at 10440 Colonel Court and is expected to be in operation by late summer or early fall. Rector Construction Company of Manassas was awarded the contract to build the structure. The project will include 40,000 square feet of storage space, 14000 square feet for the mini-units and 12,700 square feet for the office complex. Company president Steven R. Cook said the population growth of the area made the building of the new facilities necessary. "We will retain our present warehouse and mini-storage facilities at 9151 Liberia Avenue (which now was sold in 2005), but we need additional room for expansion," said Cook. The firm has been located at that location since it opened in 1967. The company was started by Cook's late father, Charles K. Cook and two partners, Lando Hatcher and Michael Banikas. "At first the company served as a delivery outlet with its small trucks for appliances sold by Sears, J.E. Rice, and Woolworth, but then grew into a local moving firm for household, commercial and office ventures," said Cook. Later the warehouse storage and mini-storage units were added as well as large moving trucks. Government contracts have been a big part of their success, particularly from families at Fort Belvoir, Cook said. "We have over 2 million pounds of household items stored from military families who have their furniture stored while they are overseas," Cook said. Cook said the firm, in addition to contracting for local movers, is an agent for Stevens Van Lines and moves all over the United States. "For the past 45 years, we have run our business with integrity, and I think our customers appreciate that," said Cook. The firm has 25 employees at the present but will expand to 40 to 50 people in the summertime. Financing for the complex is being done by Marshall National Bank and Trust
